What are the rules of Cornhole?

Cornhole, sometimes called “bags”, is a popular and entertaining yard game that is played with either two or four players. The object of the game is to throw bags full of beans or corn onto wooden boards with holes in them, while earning points for different actions. Getting a bag on the board is one point, getting it in the hole earns three points. Lets run over some basics.

Setup & Equipment

In order to play cornhole you will need a set of cornhole boards which should be 4’x2′ with legs about 12″ tall, along with eight bags, with each set of four being their own color. There are a variety of weights to the bags, but the standard is between 14 and 16 oz. The boards can be home made or purchased or rented from Triangle Lawn Games. All of our sets also come with bags.

Once you have your set, you will need some space to operate. Cornhole boards should be set up 27′ “hole-to-hole” meaning the center of the holes in each board should be exactly 27′ from each other. If you are just playing in your backyard or at a corporate event, you can simply walk out 27 steps and it will be fine. If you are more serious or having a tournament it might make sense to cut a piece of string exactly 27′ so you can use that to measure. Game Play

Once you have your game setup it’s time to start. To determine who goes first you can do a variety of things. The most common that we see is each player throws a bag, and if someone makes it on/in that team goes first. There are many ways to determine order, so as the fabulous adult you all are we are sure you’ll figure that part out.

There are two people per team, and a player from each team stands on each end, meaning there are two boards and two players at each board. This way you are always throwing to the side of your teammate, and they can easily throw them back. The first team goes, and you alternate the throws. For each subsequent turn the team that scored points in the last turn will go Bags should be thrown underhanded one at a time.

Scoring

Scoring is a little difficult with cornhole, but here is the basic concept: each turn 8 bags are thrown. You get 1 point for getting a bag on the board, and 3 points for getting it in the hole. No points are awarded if it bounces up on the board, or if its 1/2 on the board and 1/2 touching ground. Only one team scores per turn, as cornhole uses a “cancelling out” method. That means if team A gets 2 on the board and one in the hole (5 points) and team B gets 3 on the board and 2 in the hole (9 points) then team B is awarded the difference (4 points) and the turn is over.

The object of the game is to get to 21 points. It is common for people to play a rule of “going over” meaning it is important to land directly on 21 at the end to win. If you go over your team score would drop down to 15. For example if you are at 19 points, and at the end of your turn you hit a “ringer” which is getting in the hole, you would earn 3 points and be at 22. Not good….so you go down to 15. It is this rule that sees many people tossing bags purposely to the side so as to not go over.
